A native of Long Beach, California, Dorothy has been painting in oils and drawing in pencil and pen and ink since childhood.  She was an art major at Occidental College, where she received her B.A. in fine arts.  She is married to Tom, also an Oxy graduate.  While not actively involved in painting during the early years of their marriage, Dorothy enjoyed crafts such as macrame and stained glass while working part-time and raising their four children.  When their children were in college and high school, Dorothy resumed painting, this time in watercolor and mixed media.  She also enjoyed learning the art of printmaking through classes in etching and using the printing presses to create monoprints.  She was an active member of San Diego Watercolor Society, where she enjoyed taking workshops from many prominent watercolor teachers from throughout the United States and Canada.

While living in Southern California, Dorothy was a founding member of Carlsbad Village Faire Gallery, a gallery specializing in artwork by local artists. By the time she moved to Idaho, the gallery was co-owned by four women and represented over 85 local area artists.

Dorothy and Tom discovered Sandpoint and the Hope area while looking for a place to retire.  They are very happy to live in an area that is so supportive of the arts, while having skiing and golf for Tom!  In 1996, they moved from California to Hope Peninsula, where Dorothy enjoys painting the nature around her.  “I consider my work to be ‘impressionistic realism’, with an emphasis on color.  I strive to create paintings that the viewer responds to and enjoys living with.  While watercolor is my primary medium, I also enjoy experimenting with different techniques and media.”  A new interest is painting on silk.
