Buck Mountain
Pen and Ink

At the age of twenty-one the wilderness called Buck Mountain
to explore the high Cascade Mountains and inland desserts of Washington state.
As he matured, he retreated deeper and deeper into the high country.

Quail

In the early 80s he made his way to the Bob Marshal Wilderness of western Montana.
Buck Mountain started drawing in grade school.
He never had any formal training.
Instead, his solitary life began to shape his artistic vision.
He began seeing more details in smaller pieces of everyday life.

This way of seeing things transferred into his art.
Buck’s complex ink drawings portray wildlife, Native American stories and historic events
in a unique blend of geometric lines, silhouettes and minute pen strokes.
Within his drawings people can see something new every time they look.
Just following a line from start to finish can change the way the piece presents itself.

Sees Far

Buck’s black and white drawings are distinctive,
making them stand out from more traditional art forms.

Another distinctive aspect of Buck’s art is the pseudonym he uses, Buck Mountain.
While on a hunting trip in the Colville National Forest,
he came upon a hunting camp.
The hunters were Natives from the Colville Tribe.
While sharing their camp, he related his dream of living full time in the wilderness.
After listening to his vision, a young woman told him if he was going to live in the mountains,
he needed a mountain man name.
She gave him the name, Buck Mountain.
This is the signature he uses on all of his art work.
